She Inspires: The Question of A Lifetime

She Inspires: The Question of A Lifetime

Who are you? Before answering this simply yet profound question, remember that who you are is never associated with an occupation, a person, or a thing. Who you are begins with the core essence of you that’s unseen to the natural eye. It’s your deepest desires and can be found in your darkest fears.

So—taking some time to think about it… who are you?

Truly learning the core of you takes time, patience, grace, and honesty. Here are some things that helped me along my journey of learning who I am at my core:

I read a lot of self-improvement books

Reading is fundamental. Most books are amazing but few can truly become life-changing. One book that helped me grow was “What to Do until Love Finds You” by Michelle Hammond McKinney. The first time I read this book was years ago but I still remember the moment of breakthrough: I was ending a horrible relationship and was slowly losing myself in a state of depression. One chapter of the book broke me down (literally). I cried for hours in my quiet house; the phone was on silent, the TV was off and the sound of my whimpers echoed. It was my moment of breakthrough with God. I couldn’t have experienced that moment without that book. Reading wasn’t only fundamental for my brain; reading became fundamental to my growth.

Self-Reflection

The older I become, the more my gift of influence and relationships become more apparent and clear. When facing difficult situations with people—I always self-reflect, asking myself HOW and WHY I responded the way I did. I also pay attention to how my thoughts react. That matters more than most realize.

I give grace… to MYSELF

In the process of learning myself, I learned things that I didn’t like. I wanted to change them but here’s the thing: if we could change ourselves on our own, we would have done it by now. We need God to help us change and grace is required through the process. If giving grace to yourself doesn’t come easy, remember the One that gives grace to you daily. If He can do it, we should certainly try our hardest to do the same too.

So, I let me ask again….

Who are you?

Seek. Discover. Evolve and love.

XOXO

She Empowers: How to Really Connect in a Digital World

She Empowers: How to Really Connect in a Digital World

We live in a high-tech digital world that is only going to get more digital with the coming generations. We can order our groceries online and have them delivered at our house, we can text people instead of picking the phone up to call them, and we can even deposit checks into our bank accounts with our phones thanks to technology. If we wanted to, we could avoid human contact all together. We are the generation of likes, apps, retweeting, connecting, friends and emoji’s. While there’s an abundance of screen to screen interaction, face to face interaction is dwindling and with it depression, anxiety, and discontentment are on the rise (everydayhealth.com)

So is this screen to screen interaction really connecting? How do we move with the times but keep the simple act of communicating and really connecting with each other alive? People need people. When we start replacing real conversations and language with text messages and emoji’s we’re creating gaps for the enemy to come in and attack individuals. We need to remember that no amount of connecting online can take the place of actually connecting and getting together with people to be present with them and be a shoulder to lean on or to share a laugh with is crucial.

With our gadgets it’s easy to hide. It’s easy to appear one way but actually be the complete opposite. It’s easy to mask real issues that need to be dealt with. So how do we get back to basics here? Here’s some tips on how to start connecting with the people you love and strangers 90’s style.

  1. CALL YOUR FRIENDS

Yes, we mean actually pick up the phone and check in on your friends! Once a week make an actual phone call in which you are interacting with someone without texting or through a social media outlet.

  1. LEAVE YOUR PHONE IN THE CAR

If you are going out to lunch or a movie with a friend or your boyfriend, LEAVE THE PHONE. It’s okay. You don’t have to capture every moment. Be present. Give whoever you are with your full, undivided attention. They deserve it and might even need it.

  1. Dare I say, GET RID OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Okay, you don’t have to get rid of all the outlets, but maybe try giving up or deleting the app on your phone for a day or two. Watch how this will free up your time and challenge you to connect in different ways. The world will keep spinning if you aren’t tweeting, trust me.

  1. WRITE A LETTER

Yes. Go get some paper and a pen and write a letter to a friend! This is a good way to brighten someone’s day and an excuse to go to the post office and interact with humans.

With love and big smiles,

torrie

She Inspires: Letters To You: The “To Do List”

She Inspires: Letters To You: The “To Do List”

Hey You,

If you’re anything like me, you’re a little shocked that it’s already mid-October! Seriously, where did this year go? As the Autumn leaves change, I’m reminded yet again, “time flies when you’re chasing PURPOSE.” This year flew past and has been life-changing, and yet there’s still much to be done! When I look at my “To Do List” for this year, I feel proud and a little overwhelmed surveying what I’ve accomplished and what’s left to be done. However, instead of getting flustered and feeling rushed, I took some time to pause over the last couple weeks to assess what I’ve completed and prioritize the tasks that remain. This way, I know what deserves my immediate attention and energy.

In addition to prioritizing my remaining tasks, I also make a conscious effort to look at my goals and desires realistically. What can actually be done in these last few months? What can I set aside to tackle at the top of 2016? For some, this may be difficult or disappointing, but I’m learning to go with the flow and let things develop organically. Instead of being upset about what’s incomplete, I suggest using your energy to complete the tasks that are most pressing. There’s no need to be hard on yourself as long as you’re consistently and diligently working towards your goals. Trust they’ll be complete in the time they are meant. At this place in my life, I’m praying more and more for God’s DIVINE TIMING, because I never want to move outside of His will. The results are NEVER favorable and the hassle of getting back on track is just not worth it.

As you review where you are at this point in your life and this year, be loving and kind to yourself. Instead of considering the opinions of others and what anyone else is doing, be considerate of what you need to do first! These are your goals, plans, dreams, and visions! Remember: You are responsible for ALL you do and become. Use your energy wisely! You reap what you sow and if you want a great return, you have to put in a great investment. YOU are worth it!

LIGHT and LOVE,

She Empowers: 20 Somethings for the 20 Something Soul

She Empowers: 20 Somethings for the 20 Something Soul

Dear 20 something soul,

Something #5

LAY IT DOWN AT THE FEET OF JESUS

Okay, so despite me telling you to not worry about what others are doing, worrying is unfornately a BIG part of our twenties. If it’s not worrying about one thing, it’s worrying about something else. Our twenties are filled with questions that stress and worry us to the core, for example but not limited to:

  1. Will I get the job?
  2. What preschool are we going to send the kids to?
  3. My car broke down and I have no money to fix it, what am I going to do?
  4. Do I want to go back to college?
  5. What’s my passion?
  6. How do I get out of all this debt?
  7. Will I ever be able to buy a home?
  8. Do I have cute clothes for the fall?
  9. Am I parenting right?
  10. When will I find my husband?

Ladies, I’m sure you can relate to one or more of those worries. But guess what, not one of us can add on a day to our life by worrying ourselves. I want you to meditate on Matthew 6:25-33. I love the way to Message paraphrase puts it:

“If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.”

“Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.”

“If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, and God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.”

Trust that word sisters. Meditate on it and let it live inside of you until you truly learn to not worry about a thing!!

Till next time,

20 Something Soul
